Princeview Dental Commends Indian Dental Association on Raising Oral Cancer Awareness

The screenings took place in 23 cities across India in clinics and mobile units with the intention of making the country more conscious of the disease, its causes, and the preventative methods. More than 126 doctors participated and screened over 25,000 patients at no cost during the length of the campaign, which took place from September 1–7. Dr. Mummery explains that over 3,000 new cases of oral cancer are diagnosed in Canada each year, with more than 1,000 of those cases ending in death. The high mortality rate is because oral cancer is often detected too late; people ignore bleeding or discomfort in their mouth more so than any other part of the body, when in fact it should be the reverse. “While smoking does increase the risk of oral cancer, poor oral health can also lead to the disease,” Dr. Mummery warns. “People need to really pay attention to their oral hygiene and the frequency of their teeth cleaning.”
