Princeview Dental Commends Indian Dental Association on Raising Oral Cancer Awareness

Toronto, Canada (PRWEB), September 12, 2014 – Princeview Dental (www.PrinceviewDental.com), one of Etobicoke’s premier dental clinics, is acknowledging the efforts of the Indian Dental Association’s joint effort with the Indian Cooperative Oncology Network and Bicon Oncotherapeutics to conduct national oral cancer screenings.

The screenings took place in 23 cities across India in clinics and mobile units with the intention of making the country more conscious of the disease, its causes, and the preventative methods. More than 126 doctors participated and screened over 25,000 patients at no cost during the length of the campaign, which took place from September 1–7. “It’s a world away, but the problem of oral cancer is something that is also a big issue right here in Canada,” says Dr. Janice Mummery, founder of Princeview Dental. “Seeing the steps that the dental and cancer communities in India took to raise awareness of this disease is inspiring and goes a long way towards saving lives. With it being one of the more deadly forms of cancer, raising awareness of the disease is one way to educate the country and prevent this disease from infecting thousands of Canadians every year.”

Dr. Mummery explains that over 3,000 new cases of oral cancer are diagnosed in Canada each year, with more than 1,000 of those cases ending in death. The high mortality rate is because oral cancer is often detected too late; people ignore bleeding or discomfort in their mouth more so than any other part of the body, when in fact it should be the reverse. “While smoking does increase the risk of oral cancer, poor oral health can also lead to the disease,” Dr. Mummery warns. “People need to really pay attention to their oral hygiene and the frequency of their teeth cleaning.”

“The standard teeth cleaning routines that hear dentists speak of every day truly are important when it comes to preventing or detecting oral cancer: brushing the teeth and tongue twice a day, flossing daily, visiting a dentist, and checking for bleeding gums or sores that don’t heal, all of these measures are important,” Dr. Mummery concludes. “We at Princeview Dental encourage everyone to visit their dentist regularly for teeth cleanings and full oral exams.”
