Sugar in Medication Increases the Risk of Caries

The American Dental Association published an article last month in which they posed the question of what effect the sugar content in liquid medications prescribed by oral health professionals has in increasing the likelihood of caries, also known as tooth decay and cavities. According to the study, patients taking daily multiple doses of these liquid medications are at a higher risk for caries. “It’s a significant question, and one that does need to be answered, as it can impact the ways in which we dentists treat our patients,” says Dr. Janice Mummery, founder of Princeview Dental. “Sugar is present in many of the liquid medications we prescribe, so if we can somehow improve the care we offer our patients in any way, then we’d like to know how.”

According to the study, more than 50 popular brands of medication contained sugar, some up to four grams per serving, which is typically a teaspoon. It also notes that avoiding these medications is the best way to encourage proper oral care in dental patients.

“Of course, this is only one study,” Dr. Mummery concludes. “However, knowing this information certainly helps dentists to at least consider prescribing alternative medications that do not contain high doses of sugar.”
