For parents, preparing a healthy lunch meal is probably much easier than finding healthy snacks that promote oral health.

“Finding the right snacks that are allowed inside of elementary and middle schools is made more difficult because there are so many food restrictions,” she adds. “For instance, nuts and peanut butter are both positive options, but peanuts are not allowed in many schools across Toronto and the GTA, so parents really need to dig to find alternative snack items.”

Overall, Dr. Mummery explains, the most effective way to establish strong teeth is to ensure a consistent dose of fruits and vegetables, along with lean meats and whole grain breads and cereals. These food choices form the basis of healthy oral care in children that will last to adulthood.

“Plain yogurt is another good snack choice, although the lack of taste may make a tough sell for younger children,” she observes. “Try adding some fruits to the yogurt to infuse some taste and get your son or daughter to actually eat it. Popcorn is another good choice, providing it’s not covered in butter or salt.”

Dr. Mummery also encourages those looking to strengthen their children’s teeth to avoid giving them food and drinks with high acid content. Acid wears away at the teeth and can cause excess sensitivity. Pop, orange juice, and lemonade are all acid-filled drinks that should be avoided regularly.”

“And if children do plan on drinking these low-pH drinks, try to have them drink them with a meal. There’s a stronger flow of saliva during meals and more saliva means more protection for the teeth,” Dr. Mummery concludes. “It’s also a good idea not to clean teeth until an hour after a meal. The acid still present in the mouth removes the surface from the teeth, so waiting helps the saliva fight the acid.”

Founded in 1994, Princeview Dental is a trusted dental clinic in Etobicoke.
