People should also brush their tongues and not overuse mouthwash; that’s because the tongue accumulates bacteria that need to be cleaned just as much as teeth do.” (Source: Stork, T., “How to eliminate bad breath,” Canadian Living web site; http://www.canadianliving.com/health/prevention/how_to_eliminate_bad_breath.php, last accessed May 16, 2014.)

Dr. Mummery explains that there are causes of bad breath where regular brushing and flossing just aren’t enough to eliminate the problem. One potential factor is tonsil stones, which build up in the tonsils and can ignite halitosis. In cases where nothing else has worked and halitosis persists, then removing the tonsils may be the best option to eliminating bad breath.
